Story Endings

This section will cover the outcome of the game's main story. Of course, there are many additional end-game scenarios, so be sure to check out Geralt's Epilogues and World-State Endings.

The outcome of the story largely depends on choices Geralt makes during the missions Battle Preparations, Blood on the Battlefield and Final Preparations.

This finale occurs if Geralt chooses more positive actions during the missions Battle Preparations, Blood on the Battlefield and Final Preparations, and did not visit the Emperor during Blood on the Battlefield.

After the events on Undvik, Geralt goes to see Emhyr var Emreis and tell him that his daughter sacrificed herself to prevent the White Frost from consuming the land.

Afterwards, he makes his way back to the former garrison outpost in White Orchard, where he receives a specially-crafted silver sword from a hired blacksmith. He then returns to the White Orchard Inn, where he meets Ciri in disguise and presents her with her new Witcher sword - a tool she is eager to test in the field.

This ending occurs if Geralt chose more positive actions during the missions Battle Preparations, Blood on the Battlefield and Final Preparations, and visited the Emperor during Blood on the Battlefield, and Nilfgaard wins the war.

After the events on Undvik, you finds yourself at the inn in White Orchard. It is winter, and Zoltan and Dandelion are sitting nearby arguing as you excuse yourself to meet an old friend for a hunt at a nearby hunters shack. Speak with the hunter when you arrive, and he'll direct you on to your next nearby destination.

You'll meet Ciri there; the two set out on what will be several small, but meaningful father/daughter activities, as well as light conversation. When Ciri and you return to the inn, you'll find a group of Nilfgaardian soldiers waiting to escort Ciri back to the palace. Ciri tells you when she previously spoke to her father, Emhyr, that she realized that the only way she could affect things positively in the world was to ascend to the Nilfguard throne. After a tearful goodbye, the two of you part ways - certain that you will meet again.

the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-epilogue-03-something-ends-something-begins-iii-bad-ending

This is the equivalent of the "bad ending" to Witcher 3. If, during the missions Battle Preparations, Blood on the Battlefield and Final Preparations, Geralt responded negatively to his decisions and admonished Ciri, she will lose faith in herself during her final confrontation against the White Frost.

One week after the events on Undvik, Geralt returns to Crookback Bog to seek vengeance on the crone Weavess - who had stolen Ciri's witcher medallion. With the aid of a werewolf, Geralt defeats Weavess and her monsterous allies - though the Witcher is overcome with grief upon recovering the pendant. As the game comes to a close, Geralt is swarmed by dozens of monsters in the swamp - his ultimate fate left unknown.

Character Endings

This section contains information on the fate of various characters that Geralt encounters during the course of the game.

Geralt of Rivia

There are three epilogues for Geralt at the end of The Witcher 3, providing he doesn't get the "bad" ending:

http://2x" width="468" />

Geralt remains a Witcher on the Path: If Geralt makes no attempt to romance either Triss Merigold or Yennefer of Vengerberg - or, worse yet, attempts to romance them both- he will spend the remainder of his days as a Witcher on the open road, occasionally reminiscing with old friends about the life he might have lived instead.

http://2x" width="468" />

Geralt retires to Kovir with Triss: This ending occurs if, during the missions A Matter of Life and Death and Now or Never, Geralt romances Triss and asks her to stay with him (and avoids romancing Yennefer later in the game). The couple move north to Kovir, where Merigold earns a handsome living as an advisor to the king, while Geralt takes on the occasional Witcher Contract.

http://2x" width="468" />

Geralt and Yennefer retire together: If Geralt avoids romancing Triss Merigold and instead attempts to woo Yennefer during the mission The Last Wish, the Witcher and the Sorceress will retire together - far from the noise and danger of politics and adventure.

Emperor Emhyr var Emries

http://2x" width="468" />

If Geralt did nothing to aid the assassination of Radovid in the side quest A Deadly Plot, or sided with Sigismund Djikstra in the mission Reason of State, the Nilfgaardian empire will lose their war and be pushed back to the south. Seeing their emperor defeated and humiliated, the Nilfgaardians gain the strenght to overthrow their leader - gutting him in the process.

http://2x" width="468" />

Should players complete the side quest Reasons of State and side with Vernon Roche, Emhyr var Emries will successfully conquer the North. Once his invasion is complete, he seeks out and eliminates anyone within his ranks who sought to do him traitorous harm.

Phillip Strengar, Baron of Velen

http://2x" width="468" />

If, during the story mission The Whispering Hillock, Geralt decided to kill the spirit ( or save it by performing the quest BEFORE starting the mission “Ladies of the Wood”), the Baron will rescue his wife during the mission Return to Crookback Bog. Anna (his wife) will be in severe shock, and Strengar vows to get her help from a medecin man in the far-off Blue Mountains.

http://2x" width="468" />

If Geralt frees the spirit of The Whispering Hillock, then a foul curse will be put upon the Baron's wife during Return to Crookback Bog. Despite lifting the hex, Anna is too weak to survive - bereft at her passing, the Baron hangs himself from the tree in Crow's Perch.

The Leader of The North

the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-guide-endings-who-rules-the-north

Based on choices Geralt makes throughout the game, the lands of Novigrad and Velen may end up with one of three rulers at the completion of the game.

Radovid the Stern

This ending occurs if Geralt does not assisnt in the assassination of the Redanian king in the side quests A Deadly Plot or Reason of State.

http://2x" width="468" />

Despite being certifiably insane, Radovid proved himself a tactical mastermind time and time again. As such, he was able to defeat the Nilfgaardian invaders and push them back to the south.

http://2x" width="468" />

After the war had finally ended, Radovid's men continued their purge for "Moral Renewal." Mages, non-humans, even healers and pellars all face persecution, if not far worse.

Sigismund Djikstra

Djikstra will become ruler of the North if Geralt assisted in the assassination of Radovid V during the missions A Deadly Plot and Reason of State, then sided with Sigismund instead of Roche.

http://2x" width="468" />

After the assassination of Radovid, Djikstra rose to power concealed in shadow - finally stepping out into the light once the war against the invaders had been won.

http://2x" width="468" />

While his reign was prosperous, his focus on industrialization on consolidating power greatly resembled that of the Nilfgaardian invaders, to the dismay of many of his new subjects.

Emhry var Emries

This ending occurs if Geralt completed the quests A Deadly Plot and Reason of State, assassinating Radovid V and then siding with Vernon Roche.

http://2x" width="468" />

With Radovid gone from power, his armies lost their best tactician. Without the strategic guidance of their king, the Redaian forces allowed Nilfgaard to overtake their lands.

http://2x" width="468" />

However, thanks to the consisten efforts of Vernon Roche and the remenants of his Blue Stripes commandos, Emhyr var Emries was unwilling to keep losing assets to the guerrilla attacks, and agreed to restore the lands formerly known as Temeria.

The Leader of the Skellige Isles

There are three possible rulers of the Skellige Isles at the conclusion of The Witcher 3.

Svanrige Bran

http://2x" width="468" />

If Geralt ignores the secondary quests Clan an Craite and King's Gambit, the young ruler of Skellige will hold onto his power and dismantle all of the individual fiefdoms in favor of a centralized govering force. This is done through bloody conquest above all else, and many citizens are put to the sword in the name of progress.

Hjalmar an Craite

http://2x" width="468" />

If Geralt completes the Clan an Craite side quests, then sided with Hjalmar during King's Gambit, then the people of Skellige will continue raiding with mainland's coast. Ever spring, Hjalmar's crews will fight and die with Nilfgaard's soldiers.

Cerys an Craite

http://2x" width="468" />If Geralt completes the Clan an Craite side quests, then sided with Cerys during King's Gambit, Skellige will see newfound peace and prosperity under the rule of Cerys an Craite. She rules with purpose and ensures the comfort and safety of her people above all else.
