John Cena is a pro-wrestler who is currently working with the World Wrestling Entertainment promotion.
Although John Cena got his start in California’s UPW promotion, he didn’t become a big star until he moved back east. Snapped up by the WWE for development in its Ohio Valley Wrestling farm-system promotion, he eventually became one of pro wrestling’s biggest stars.
In UPW and OVW, he was “the Prototype,” a riff on cyborg movie characters like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s in The Terminator. Like several of his fellow OVW graduates, though – Randy Orton and Dave Batista being other examples – he left the gimmick behind when he made it to the WWE, and more or less played himself.
His signature freestyle-rap interviews came about partly by accident. A few other wrestlers heard him jokingly talking in rhyme backstage once, which led to a promo on a Halloween episode of SmackDown where Cena dressed up as Vanilla Ice. The shtick caught on, eventually becoming part of his complete hip-hop-inspired persona. His F-U finisher is another joke that stuck – originally, the name was a mocking play on Brock Lesnar’s F-5. In turn, the F-U inspired the STFU, a modified version of the venerable stepover toehold facelock (although the name’s resemblance to a certain bit of popular online slang is, officially, coincidental).
Though it’s hard to tell whether Cena’s more loved or more hated by the WWE’s crowds sometimes, they definitely care about him one way or the other. Pro Wrestling Illustrated reckoned him the #1 singles wrestler in the world in both 2006 and 2007, which probably looks nice on his mantelpiece alongside his three WWE championship reigns.
