At the heart of Resident Evil lies its basic, graphic-adventure premise. Zombies have come alive, and you (as one of two story-specific characters) must investigate the freaky goings on. The graphics are gorgeous, combining polygon-modeled characters with prerendered backgrounds. Camera angles are limited, but allow for a greater degree of detail on the characters. So there are a couple of issues, sure. It's not a perfect game. But Resident Evil is easily the scariest, most atmospheric videogame I've very played. It's the only one I've ever been afraid to play alone. It's a triumph as a stand-alone adventure and a major accomplishment as a remake. Every gamer -- whether you've played the original or have never heard of the franchise -- should pick this up for their GameCube. So there are a couple of issues, sure. It's not a perfect game. But Resident Evil is easily the scariest, most atmospheric videogame I've very played. It's the only one I've ever been afraid to play alone. It's a triumph as a stand-alone adventure and a major accomplishment as a remake. So, for the most part, Resident Evil: Deadly Silence is a great conversion of Resident Evil that tweaks a bit here and tightens a bit there. What was good about the PlayStation version is still good here on a smaller scale, and the added elements do a decent job enhancing the experience and shaking things up for those who've experienced the game a hundred times before. But, honestly, it's hard to ignore all the little quirks in gameplay and presentation that were a bit easier to disregard in the earlier days of 3D adventuring, so if we look at it as a new title instead of a revival, well, it's not a whole lot better than a good but flawed game design.">Reviewed by Craig Harris

I love coming back to Resident Evil, and this version does a good job of updating the look and feel of an old game for a modern audience. Some of the older visual flaws detract from the experience and pulled me out of tense moments, but the gameplay hooked me right back in. Resident Evil relies on atmosphere, tough limitations, and danger creeping around all corners, and this port recaptures the formula of a classic, relentless survival-horror game.">Reviewed by Jose Otero

I was impressed by Resident Evil 2 on the Playstation. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the PC version. It's just too shallow for the average PC gamer. With such little change over the Playstation version, it makes you wonder why it took Capcom three months to get this one out on the PC. Sure, Resident Evil 2 has a cool backstory, lots of exploding zombies, and it will truly scare you in a few places, but it only satisfies hardcore gamers for a few hours at most. Resident Evil 2 remains one of my preferred games on last generation's PlayStation and had the title been remade as Capcom revamped RE1, it might have been a remarkable GameCube title. As it stands, though, RE2 hits Nintendo's next-generation console totally unchanged and -- five years old, just feels completely outdated. The end port is not a bad one. If you're a RE or survival horror fan, you definitely sill play Code Veronica, but in its unchanged form it's not worth Capcom's entry price of $39.99. Resident Evil: Code Veronica certainly stood as a high mark for its franchise at the time. Revisiting the game, with its dated graphics and in light of the significant improvements made by its successors, proves an entirely different experience. It's a strange hybrid of Resident Evil "Survival Horror" trimmings, without the best parts. And it's not for the smart. Don't buy this, but if you must play everything Resident Evil, then buy it used, or rent it. It'll provide you with about four hours maximum of campy, brainless shooting kicks. Resident Evil Gaiden marks Capcom's completion with Game Boy Color gaming...it's GBA or bust now. Luckily the company also shipped Shantae on the same day as this game, because it would suck to finish off 8-bit development with a game as dull as RE: Gaiden. Don't get me wrong, I totally respect the M4 team for trying its hand at the license...but the game design just doesn't work. It's not fun. The side-story is pretty cool, though, and it'd be a good thing if the game's plot was revisited on a more capable system. Just lose the overhead perspective and the golf-swing battles. The game is still scary, and if that's good enough for you then don't bother reading the rest of my comments -- go now and pick it up. You won't be disappointed. And though our experience with game wasn't as consistent at some of the other titles in the genre, its efforts at being different, its high production values, and legitimately entertaining mini-moments deserve a little recognition in what has otherwise been a history of negativity.

The puzzle mechanics work smoothly, environments are introduced in skillful fashion, and the fighting is always interesting and low on frustration factor, aside from the aim-to-shoot mechanic in close quarters combat. If you don't have a PS2 or GameCube lying around, you really should play this game, and to do so you really need a gamepad. The game's got five extra missions where you play as Ada Wong, some new weapons and costumes, and a 20 dollar price tag. Resident Evil: The Missions benefits from incredibly smart design choices. Recreating an RE game in a top-down perspective would have been a little dull. Using the familiar fixed camera angles, the pre-rendered backgrounds, and recognizable characters and locations will get the fan base excited. And the way the game is segmented into easily consumed set pieces is great for mobile gamers, as it allows them to play for a few minutes at a time if the real world is creeping in. The core combat mechanics and thrilling atmosphere make for a very addicting experience. But the fact that this game costs $40 is a frustrating proposition. Between persistent frame rate issues and very little depth, this game really should have been included in the upcoming Resident Evil Revelations as a bonus game. That's what Mercenaries was designed to be, and no amount of extras will change that. Given the huge amount of potential the developers of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City had to work with, it's disappointing how little of it was actually realized. On several occasions I was legitimately surprised by the mention of the name William Birkin or the familiar sound of picking up an herb, having long forgotten that this was supposed to be a Resident Evil game. The terrible AI, the lackluster locations and the complete lack of atmosphere or memorable characters destroy what could have been a brilliant offshoot.
