Beta Ray Bill
There’s another Marvel character who is worthy to hold Mjolnir. While we haven’t met him yet in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you might not have realized that we’ve already seen him. Beta Ray Bill is an alien superhero who debuted in Marvel Comics in 1983, and his horse-like visage can be seen in Thor: Ragnarok on the outside of the Grandmaster’s towering headquarters.
A hero from a refugee alien species known as Korbinites, in the comics Bill picked up the hammer during his first encounter with Thor and was granted the powers of the thunder god. Eventually, he relinquished Mjolnir back to Thor, and Odin created Stormbreaker, a hammer imbued with the power of the Asgardians, for Beta Ray Bill to wield.
Bill would go on to partner with Thor many times and call him friend. Together they took on countless enemies of both Asgard and the entire galaxy. We know he already exists in the MCU, so it’s ready for him—and so are we.
Balder
A classic Thor character created in the 1960s by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Balder was the half-brother of the God of Thunder. Similar to his Norse namesake Baldr, his fate was tied to Ragnarok and the end of Asgard. He’s not only a noble warrior, but also stepped in to lead Asgard when Odin couldn’t. As in the films, Ragnarok happened, and Balder wound up in Hel more than once. More recently, he became the Regent of Hel—while Jane Foster held Mjolnir.
While it seems unlikely to see Balder in the MCU, where a secret sibling and Ragnarok have already been revealed, it’s possible an Asgardian with that name is living on Earth under the rule of Valkryie.
Cul Borson
Another Asgardian that we might see on the big screen for the first time, this character is more than a formidable adversary of the God of Thunder. Cul Borson was created in 2011 as part of the Fear Itself event storyline. The Asgardian God of Fear, he also claimed the name Serpent—the same Serpent prophesized to bring about the death of Thor. Serpent would go on to corrupt many of Earth’s heroes and villains to make them his harbingers to spread fear and destruction. Good eventually triumphed, although at the cost of Thor’s life, and Cul repented and was forgiven by Odin.
When Jane Foster became Thor, it was Cul who Odin sent to retrieve Mjolnir from the apparent interloper. He assumed the form of the Destroyer, and it took Freyja’s intervention to stop his attack on the Goddess of Thunder. Cul is one of our picks to be the foe to Jane Foster’s Thor in the MCU—mostly because we’d love to see Bale with that glorious mustache.
Dario Agger
One of the Big Bads (literally) of Jane Foster’s time as Thor was Dario Agger, AKA Minotaur. He had been granted the ability to transform into a massive minotaur by a dark god, and he used his power to gain even more strength and influence—in the business world. Agger was an intelligent businessman and CEO of Roxxon Corporation. He formed an alliance with Malekith the dark elf and other shadowy figures to use the other realms as potential new markets, but the kingpins of business (including the actual Kingpin) saw this as a challenge to their own holdings. Thor found herself trying to save Dario from the jealous rivals in one of her first major challenges.
Agger could make an appearance in the next Thor movie as a shady businessman with or without his minotaur alter ego. Bale would look right at home in the MCU in a menacingly sharp suit. But if there’s any filmmaker who could make a talking minotaur in a business suit work, it’s Taika Waititi.
Gorr the God Butcher
Shortly before Jane Foster became Thor, there was one foe who almost took everything from the God of Thunder. Gorr the God Butcher declared war on all gods of the universe, including Thor Odinson, wielding All-Black the Necrosword. The powerful weapon granted Gorr the ability to take on the gods one-on-one. Gorr’s crusade came from questioning the gods as a means of salvation because they never answer the prayers of their worshippers. He planted a seed of doubt in Thor’s mind that would grow until the Odinson considered himself unworthy of the mantle of a god.
Gorr was certainly a dangerous enemy for Thor and his story is a compelling one. Bale could easily turn the character into a villain audiences can sympathize with, a hallmark of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
